An excess of love by Cathy Cash Spellman
RC 23413
1986
4 sound cassettes
A romantic novel set during the beginnings of the Irish movement for
independence and culminating in the 1916 Easter Monday holdout against the
British Empire. Recounts the passions and patriotic fervor of two sisters
and their offspring. Beth, unhappily married to an older Anglo-Irish lord,
eventually finds happiness with an Irish freedom fighter. Her sister
Constance runs off with a firebrand poet and playwright. Some strong
language and some explicit descriptions of sex.
This is the second time for me on this beautiful journey of words by Cathy
Cash Spellman. I do think I enjoyed it the second time even more that the
first. Spellman carries you from the countryside of Ireland, to the heart
of Dublin. From the drawing rooms of the aristocracy to the slums of the
poor. From the dreams of a young man to become a doctor, a vibrant young
girl to be a great actress, to a high born lady to become a revolutionary
activist and a man to finally know who he is, even though it's too late.
The time period is brought to life with each flip of the cassette. Joy,
heartbreak, hope and despair will carry you on your way through this truly
outstanding story. Spellman writes with such feeling that she transports
you to the place and time. There are some graphic scenes of violence, but
that is part of the historical events. A true love story, love between two
sisters, love between men and women, love between mother and child, love
between siblings and the love for one's country. The Irish revolutionist
story made me reflect on much of what is going on in our world today. This
is a heart rending tale and I urge you to read it.
